OriginLate 17th century; earliest use found in John Worlidge (d. 1693), writer on agriculture. From French pomme d'api, apparently from French pomme + de + Appius, the name of a Roman who is said by Pliny to have grafted the apple on a quince stock, after classical Latin mālum Appiānum (Pliny). |
