Before the 18th cent. apparently only in Chaucer. The word does not appear in any dictionary before Todd's edition of Johnson's Dictionary (1818)..

Late Middle English; earliest use found in Geoffrey Chaucer (c1340–1400), poet and administrator. Originally (in early use) from Middle French agréableté from agréable + -te.
