A large and widespread genus of small mosquitoes (family Culicidae) including several vectors of human disease, notably Aedes aegypti, the principal carrier of yellow fever. Also (in form aedes): a mosquito of this genus (more fully aedes mosquito).
Origin
Mid 19th century. From scientific Latin Aedes from ancient Greek ἀηδής unpleasant, disagreeable from ἀ- + ἦδος delight, pleasure from the same Indo-European base as sweet.
