A tropical American morning glory, Turbina corymbosa (family Convolvulaceae). Also: a psychoactive drug prepared from the seeds of this plant, used traditionally for ritual purposes by the Aztecs.
Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in American Anthropologist. From Nahuatl ololiuhqui, lit. ‘round thing’, referring to the spherical seeds of the plant from olol- round, spherical + -iuhqui, suffix meaning ‘like’. In form ololiuque after Spanish ololiuque.
