A strongly magnetic oxide of magnesium and ferric iron, MgFe2O4, which belongs to the spinel group and usually occurs as black octahedral crystals.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in James Dana (1813–1895), geologist, zoologist, and teacher. From magnesium + -o- + classical Latin ferrum iron + -ite, introduced by J. D. Dana as a more transparent substitute for earlier German Magnoferrit.
