Mid 16th century; earliest use found in John Bellenden (c1495–a1548), poet and translator. Originally as plural from classical Latin nundinae, feminine plural (short for nundinae feriae ninth-day holiday), a market day held every ninth day, counting inclusively from novem nine + din- day.
