Origin
Mid 17th century; earliest use found in Henry Hammond (1605–1660), Church of England clergyman and theologian. From post-classical Latin regionarius (of a deacon or subdeacon) that is at the head of one of the seven wards of Rome from classical Latin regiōn-, regiō + -ārius.
