A genus of Gram-positive, aerobic actinomycetes whose members typically form mycelia that tend to fragment into rod-shaped or coccoid elements, and are widely distributed in soil and water, sometimes acting as (usually opportunistic) pathogens of humans and other animals.
Origin
Early 20th century. From scientific Latin Nocardia from the name of Edmond I. E. Nocard, French veterinary pathologist + -ia.
