New Caledonia
An island in the South Pacific, east of Australia; population 227,400 (est. 2009); capital, Nouméa. Since 1946 the island has formed, with its dependencies, a French overseas territory; the French annexed the island in 1853. French name Nouvelle-Calédonie.
Origin
Named, by Captain Cook in 1774, after the Roman name Caledonia 'Scotland'.
