Origin1980s. From a supposed ancient Greek verb ἀγοστεῖν to clasp or hold to oneself (attributed to Homer) + -ic. In fact, ἀγοστῷ in Homer represents the dative of ἀγοστός flat of the hand, of unknown origin. |
