The banded rail of New Zealand, Gallirallus philippensis assimilis (a subspecies of the widespread buff-banded rail), which is streaked black above and barred black and white below.
Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in Frederick Hutton (1836–1905), geologist and zoologist. From Maori moho pererū from moho + pererū making a whirring, fluttering noise.
