The fibre of the shrub Maoutia puya (family Urticaceae), native to Nepal and neighbouring regions of eastern Asia, used for cloth, cordage, etc.; the plant itself.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Peter Simmonds (1814–1897), newsagent and journalist. Perhaps from nonstandard Nepali poyā in tin-poyā three-ply, misunderstood as the name of the fibre involved; compare Nepali poyo (also in standard form payo) bundle of fibres twisted into a rope.
