1 [with object] Chiefly Law. To prolong, lengthen; to extend in time or duration; to cause to last longer; to continue, to protract. Compare prorogue. Now rare.
2 [with object] Law. To extend (the jurisdiction of a court or judge) to a cause which is not properly or usually within the competence of the court or judge.
3 [with object] To defer, postpone; = prorogue. Now rare.
4 [with object] To discontinue (a regular meeting, assembly, parliament, etc.).

Origin

Late 15th century; earliest use found in Higden's Polychronicon. From classical Latin prōrogāt-, past participial stem of prōrogāre prorogue.
