Megaloptera /ˌmɛɡəˈlɒpt(ə)rə/Entomology nounTreated as plural. A small group of predatory flying insects related to or included among the Neuroptera; members of this group (collectively or individually).- The original Megaloptera of Latreille included his genera Chauliodes and Corydalus (dobsonflies), Sialis (alderflies), and Raphidia (snake flies). The name was adopted by MacLeay in his quinarian system, and applied by other 19th-century writers to various neuropteran groups. They are now generally treated either as a separate neuropteroid order comprising the alderflies and dobsonflies, or as a suborder (which is frequently taken to include also the snake flies) of the order Neuroptera..
Origin Late 19th century; earliest use found in Encyclopaedia Britannica. From scientific Latin Megaloptera, group name from megalo- + ancient Greek πτερόν wing. |
