hook gage hook gage[′hu̇k ‚gāj] (engineering) An instrument used to measure changes in the level of the water in an evaporation pan; it consists of a pointed metal hook, mounted in the vertical, whose position with respect to its supporting member may be adjusted by means of a micrometer arrangement; the gage is placed on the still well, and a measurement is taken when the point of the hook just breaks above the surface of the water. |
