Babakin, Georgii Nikolaevich
Born Oct. 31 (Nov. 13), 1914, in Moscow; died there Aug. 3, 1971. Soviet designer and specialist in the field of aerospace technology. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1970). Hero of Socialist Labor (1970). Member of the CPSU from 1951.
Babakin was a staff member at the Academy of the Communal Services System from 1937 to 1943 and at a scientific research institute from 1943 to 1949. He graduated from the All-Union Correspondence Electrical Engineering Institute of Communications in 1957 and became chief designer at a design office in 1965. Babakin supervised the development of unmanned spacecraft used in lunar and planetary research, as well as the roving vehicle Lunokhod 1.
Babakin received the Lenin Prize in 1966 and was also awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
