(wāst'hip rā'shē-ō) Waist circumference divided by hip circumference; indicator of abdominal (visceral) obesity, and predictor of health risk independent of total percentage of body fat. Ratio that exceeds 0.80 for women and 0.95 for men correlates with increased risk of death, even after controlling for body mass index.
