Geological Pick-Hammer

Geological Pick-Hammer

a tool for breaking off samples of rocks, minerals, and ores. For very hard, massive (primarily igneous) rocks a pick-hammer having one rectangular end and one laterally pointed end is used. Geological pick-hammers for stratified, schistose, and fractured rocks have the sharp end in the form of a pick, sometimes with a pyramid-shaped blade (the A. P. Pavlov hammer). For loose rocks the pick is given a laterally flat, spadelike shape.
