The economy of Goiás is largely agricultural. Its population has increased dramatically since 1950. Tin, gold, diamonds, and quartz are found nearby. Goiása state in Brazil, located in the central part of the Brazilian Highlands, in the Tocantins River basin. Area, 642.100 sq km. Population, 3,006,000 (1970), mostly Indians. Capital, Goiánia. Goiás is an economically poorly developed state. The basis of the economy is extensive animal husbandry (chiefly zebu-type cattle). There is commodity farming (mostly coffee and cotton) in the southeast as well as meat and dairy animal husbandry and vegetable and fruit farming. Natural rubber and babassu nuts are gathered; there is also hunting. Gold, diamonds, and nickel ore are mined on a small scale. Other industries include food and paper. The creation of a federal district in Goiás has resulted in the intensification of agricultural production in the nearby cities of Ceres, Anápolis, and Goiánia. |
