Valeriani, Giuseppe

Born 1708 in Rome; died Apr. 17 (28), 1762, in St. Petersburg. Italian painter, decorator, draughtsman, and architect.

In 1742, Valeriani began working in Russia, where he served as the principal decorator of the court theaters. He executed wall panels and ceilings in the palaces of St. Petersburg and its environs. Valeriani’s works are characteristic of the late Baroque era and are distinguished by their decorative splendor as well as a richness of spatial effects (for example, his sketches for stage sets and a ceiling that has been preserved in the former Stroganov Palace in Leningrad). Valeriani was in charge of the Collection of Views of St. Petersburg (published in 1753).
