Established: 1958, as the Annada District of the Mark Twain NWR; converted into a separate refuge in 2000.
Location:East of Annada, Missouri, about 40 miles north of Saint Louis.
Facilities:Wildlife viewing sites, trails.
Activities:Fishing, hunting, hiking, bicycling, berry and mushroom picking for personal consumption, wildlife watching.
Special Features:In 1998, the Great River Refuge was designated as a globally important bird area. The refuge's proximity to Saint Louis provides excellent educational opportunities to a large population.
Habitats: 15,000 wetland and riparian acres spread over 100 miles of the Mississippi River.
Access: Dawn to dusk year round.
Wild life: Migratory birds, including shorebirds, songbirds and waterfowl as well as bald eagle, canvasback, geese, fish, mussels, Indiana bat, badger, shrew, frogs, toads, salamanders, snakes, lizards, and turtles.
