Location:Southern Illinois, in the hills of the Shawnee National Forest (see entry in the national forests chapter) near Carbondale.
Facilities:Class A campground with water, electricity, showers, and sanitaryfacilities for tent or trailer camping, Class A equestrian campgroundnear the park's horse trail, 14 primitive walk-in sites; lodge with 34cabins, restaurant, lounge, swimming pool, children's pool; picnicareas and shelters, playgrounds; hiking trails, equestrian trails,horse stables, fishing ponds; visitor center with gift shop, naturaland cultural exhibits, and discovery corner for children.
Activities:Camping, boating (10 HP limit), canoeing, fishing, hiking,horseback riding, hunting, rock climbing, interpretiveprograms.
Special Features:The name "Giant City" is derived from an area in the park where uniqueimpressions have been made by massive sandstone structures. Formed12,000 years ago, the huge sandstone bluffs have created walls soprecise they seem almost manmade, with sections that appear to formstreets or alleys for a city of giants.
