monoterpene[¦män·ō′tər‚pēn] (organic chemistry) A class of terpenes with molecular formula C10H16; the members of the class contain two isoprene units. A derivative of a member of such a class. monoterpene
monoterpene Any of a number of substances (e.g., limonene, perillyl alcohol) that consist of two isoprene units and have the molecular formula C10H16. They are major components of essential oils, are found in fruits, vegetables and other plants, and have antioxidant and carcinopreventive activity. Monoterpenes induce the expression of phase-I and -II hepatic detoxification enzymes, selectively inhibit protein isoprenylation (which targets proteins to membrane) and induce expression of the mannose G phosphate/IGF-II receptor and TGF-beta. |
