Copenhagen, Treaty of (1660)

concluded between Denmark and Sweden on May 27 in Copenhagen after Sweden lost a war against Denmark in 1658–60 and after it signed the Treaty of Oliva in 1660 with Denmark’s allies.

The treaty introduced certain changes in the Roskilde Treaty of 1658—that is, the Trondheim fief (in Norway) and the island of Bornholm, which earlier had become part of Swedish terri-tory, were returned to Denmark; in addition (at the insistence of Denmark’s ally, Holland) the regulation prohibiting fleets of non-Baltic powers from sailing in the Baltic Sea was abolished.
