Champollion Jean François . 1790--1832, French Egyptologist, who deciphered the hieroglyphics on the Rosetta stone Champollion (shahm-poh -lee-awn) A US mission to comet Tempel 1 (1879 III) planned by NASA for launch in 2003. It would have arrived at the end of 2005 and released a lander to collect a sample of the comet's nucleus for return to Earth. The project was stopped for financial reasons while still in the planning stage.
