Obstetrics Volleys of tightening and shortening of myometrium–uterine muscle, which occur during labor, cause dilatation and thinning of the cervix and aid in the descent of the infant in the birth canal. See Labor. Cf Decelerations.

A term usually applied to the periodic tightening and shortening of the muscle fibres in the womb (uterus) during labour which gradually bring about the expulsion of the baby. All muscles act by contraction.
