Also known as Quizapú after the large vent on the northern flank of the volcano, Cerro Azul has a summit crater 1,600 ft (500 m) wide. Quizapú, formed in 1846 during the volcano's first eruption in historical times, erupted in 1932 with massive force, spewing out ash and boulder-size material and creating a 400-sq-mi (1,000-sq-km) desert of hardened lava. |
