Topete Y Carballo, Juan Bautista

 

Born May 24, 1821, in San Andrés Tuxtla, Mexico; died Oct. 29, 1885, in Madrid. Spanish political and military figure; vice admiral (1881).

Topete joined the Liberal Union in the 1860’s, becoming one of that party’s leaders after the death of L. O’Donnell in 1867. On Sept. 18, 1868, he led a naval insurrection in Cadiz that sparked the Spanish Revolution of 1868–74. During the revolution he served as minister of the navy under several governments. An advocate of constitutional monarchy, Topete supported the candidacy of the duke of Montpensier, husband of Isabella IPs sister, in his campaign for the Spanish throne.
