Dominion Astrophysical Observatory

An observatory near Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, at an altitude of 220 meters. The chief instruments are a 1.8-meter reflector, which went into use in 1918 and is now equipped with a new Cer-Vit mirror, and a 1.2-meter reflector, in operation since 1962. They are used mainly for spectroscopy.

Its main instruments are a 185-cm reflector (mounted in 1916) having a series of spectrographs, a 122-cm reflector (1962) having an electrophotometer and a spectrograph with a diffraction grating, a 40-cm reflector (1963) having an electrophotometer, an apparatus of original design for measuring spectra, and other laboratory instruments. The Dominion Astrophysical Observatory is well-known for its investigation of spectroscopic binaries. Its scientific research is oriented toward the measurement of radial velocities, multicolor photometry of stars, and the study of molecular spectra, stellar and planetary atmospheres, and interstellar absorption. The Dominion Astrophysical Observatory publishes Publications of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory (since 1920) and Contributions of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory (reprints of journal articles; since 1946).
