n. 1. a descendant of 17th- and 18th-century immigrants to Pennsylvania from German-speaking areas of Europe, esp. the Rhine Palatinate. 2. a dialect of High German that developed from the speech of these immigrants: spoken now mainly in sectarian communities, as those of the Amish, in E Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania GermanAn eighteenth- and nineteenthcentury softwood local style retaining European baroque features, especially the Schrank wardrobe and the softwood chest with their folk decoration.
