Archil II

Born 1647; died Feb. 16 (27), 1713, in Moscow. King of Imeritia and Kakhetia; Georgian writer. Advocate of a Russian orientation.

After an unsuccessful struggle with Persia and Turkey and the internecine wars of the feudal lords, Archil II emigrated to Moscow in 1699 at the invitation of Peter I. He founded a Georgian colony in the village of Vsekhoviatskoe, outside Moscow. He founded the first Georgian printing shop. Archil is the author of the anthology Archiliani. He eulogized Peter I in a poetical epistle on the Battle of Poltava.
