Coulomb Torsion Balance

a torsion balance invented by C. Coulomb in 1784 and used by him for studying the interaction between point electric charges and magnetic poles. In 1789, H. Cavendish used the Coulomb torsion balance for gravitational measurements and determined the constant of gravitation. The basic principle of the balance—the suspension of the instrument's moving system on a fine elastic fiber or ribbon—is used in many modern high-sensitivity instruments, such as electrometers, magnetometers, and devices for measuring variations in gravity.
