Bibikov, Aleksandr Il’ich

 

Born May 30 (June 10), 1729, in Moscow; died April 9 (20), 1774, in Bugul’ma. Russian statesman and general-in-chief.

Bibikov began military service in 1746 and emerged during the Seven Years’ War of 1756–63. In 1767 he chaired the commission for drawing up the Code of 1767. He acquired notoriety as a brutal suppressor of popular movements. In 1763 and 1764 he headed a punitive expedition against insurgent peasants in plants in the Urals. In 1771 he put down an uprising in the Polish provinces. In 1773 and early 1774 he was given unlimited powers to suppress the peasant war under the command of E. I. Pugachev, but in the heat of the punitive expedition he died.
