Budding Bacteria

[′bəd·iŋ bak′tir·ē·ə]Budding Bacteria
a group of bacteria that reproduce by budding. The spindle-shaped cell (0.5 × 1-2 microns) of the heterotrophic microorganism Hyphomicrobium, which lives in fresh and salt waters, grows a long, sometimes branched, filament. An oval bud with a polar flagellum forms at the tip of the filament. After separating from the filament, the bud is motile in the water. Budding bacteria also include the photosynthetic Rhodomicrobium, in which the bud formed at the end of the filament has flagella over its entire surface. Reproduction by budding (along with cell division and binary fission) is observed not only in budding bacteria but also in Mycobacterium, which are related to actinomycetes.
