one of the world’s largest news agencies. An autonomous commercial enterprise, Agence France-Presse was founded in 1944 to replace the old French news agency Havas. The agency’s headquarters are in Paris. In 1980, Agence France-Presse employed over 2,000 people, including 750 journalists. The agency supplies news in the French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, and Arabic languages to 155 countries. Agence France-Presse is a member of the European Alliance of Press Agencies.
