Established: Authorized as Casa Grande Ruin Reservation on March 2, 1889; redesignated by proclamation on August 3, 1918.
Location:In Coolidge, Arizona, about an hour southeast of Phoenix. From I-10, take Coolidge exits and follow signs to park entrance off AZ 87/287.
Facilities:Picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities:Guided and self-guided tours.
Special Features:The nation's first archeological preserve protects the Casa Grande (Big House), one of the largest and most mysterious prehistoric structures ever built in North America. This multi-storied, earthen-walled structure surrounded by the remains of smaller buildings and a compound wall was constructed by the Hohokam, who farmed the Gila Valley in the early 1200s. Casa Grande was abandoned by the mid-1400s.
