Caucasian Line Cossack Host

 

a cossack host formed in 1832 from five old cossack regiments, the Kizliar, Terek Family, Grebenskoi, Mozdok, and Gortsy regiments, which were stationed from the mouth of the Terek River to Mozdok, and five cossack regiments from the Azov-Mozdok line, the Volgskii, Caucasian, Stavropol’, Khoper, and Kuban’; the host also incorporated the Sunzha Regiment, which was formed in 1817, and the 1st and 2nd Vladikavkaz regiments, which were formed in 1831 under the name of the Malorossiiskii Regiments.

With the Black Sea Host, the Caucasian Line Cossack Host held the Caucasian defensive line from the mouth of the Terek to the mouth of the Kuban’ and acted jointly with the Separate Caucasian Corps against the mountaineers of the Northern Caucasus. The Kizliar and Terek Family regiments were mergedin 1838, and the Laba and Urup regiments were formed in 1840and 1850 respectively. With the growth of the host population, which exceeded 300, 000 in the mid-19th century, the majorityof the regiments were deployed in brigades in 1846; in 1860 thehost was composed of nine brigades and four separate regiments.In 1860 the Terek Cossack Host was formed out of one part of the Caucasian Line Cossack Host; the other part, together withthe Black Sea Cossack Host, formed the newly founded Kuban’Cossack Host.
