Echinuriasis

a helminthic disease of waterfowl caused by roundworms of the family Acuariidae that parasitize the mucous membrane and muscular wall of the bird’s stomach. Acuariids are small, thin nematodes that develop in an intermediate host, a water flea or freshwater shrimp.

Ducklings are particularly susceptible to the disease. The parasites cause the mucous membrane of the stomach to become inflamed and sometimes obstruct the passage of food. The birds’ digestion is disturbed, and their development is impeded. Severe infestation causes death. No treatment is as yet available. Preventive measures consist in raising the ducklings in bodies of water free from echinuriasis, relocating the birds from time to time, and breeding carp along with the ducklings.
