Boxgrove man (ˈbɒksɡrəʊv) n1. (Anthropology & Ethnology) a type of primitive man, probably Homo heidelbergensis, and probably dating from the Middle Palaeolithic period some 500 000 years ago; remains were found at Boxgrove in West Sussex in 1993 and 1995. Boxgrove Man a 500 000 years old hominid from Boxgrove, West Sussex, known from an incomplete shinbone. This was possibly a common ancestor of both the NEANDERTHALS and the taller, slimmer early modern humans. Boxgrove Man is Britain's oldest known hominid. |
