Gerindo
Gerindo
(acronym for Gerakan Rajat Indonesia—Indonesian Popular Movement), an Indonesian political organization founded by a group of leftist nationalists and communists in 1937 during the national liberation struggle of the Indonesian people.
The leadership of the Gerindo included some notable figures in the national liberation movement, including Amir Sjarifuddin, A. K. Gani, Sartono, and M. Yamin. The principal political goal of the Gerindo was self-government for Indonesia. The Gerindo represented the extreme left wing of the national liberation movement; it fought a combined struggle for national liberation and against reaction. In 1939 it helped bring about the creation of one of Indonesia’s first united national fronts—the Political Union of Indonesia (GAPI).
