Bourgelat, Claude

Born Mar. 27, 1712, in Lyons; died there Jan. 3, 1779.

Bourgelat was one of the founders of veterinary science in France and an organizer of the first veterinary schools in Europe (in Lyons, 1761, and in Alfort, 1765). Toward the end of his life he was appointed chief director of the royal veterinary school of France and elected a member of the Paris and Berlin academies of sciences. In 1777 he published Rules for French Royal Veterinary Schools.
