Borchgrevink, Carsten

 

Born Dec. 1,1864, in Christiania; died there on Apr. 23, 1934. Norwegian explorer.

In 1894 and 1895, Borchgrevink served as a seaman in the Antarctic on the Norwegian whaler Antarctic. On Jan. 24, 1895, he was the first man in the history of Antarctic research to land on the shore of Antarctica (at Cape Adare). In 1898–99 he was the first to winter on the continent as the leader of a group. Borchgrevink gave a detailed description of the Ross ice barrier. He reached 78° 50’ S lat., a record for that time.
