BoragoBoragoa genus of plants of the family Boraginaceae. The plants are annual or perennial grasses. Their entire leaves have the fragrance of cucumbers. The blue, pink, or white flowers are in cymose-panicled inflorescences. There are two or three species, distributed in the Mediterranean region, the temperate zone in Europe, and western Asia. One species, the blue-flowered borage (Borago officinalis), grows in the USSR, in the European part, the Caucasus, Middle Asia, and Western Siberia. The plant, an annual measuring 15–70 cm high, occasionally grows as a weed in gardens, near dwellings, and in refuse heaps. It is primarily cultivated in Western Europe as a vegetable crop, a bee plant, and a decorative plant. The young leaves are used in salads. The grass and the flowers contain a mucilage and are used as a coating and softening agent. BoragoenUS
