Lazarev Sea
Lazarev Sea
a marginal sea of the South Atlantic, off the shores of Eastern Antarctica, between 0° and 14° E long. Area, 335,000 sq km. Prevailing depth, more than 3,000 m. Maximum depth, more than 4,500 m. Its shores are mainly glacial, formed by the sheer cliffs of ice shelves. During most of the year the sea is covered with drift ice, and there are numerous icebergs. At the end of the summer and in the fall, drift ice remains only along the shore. The sea was identified by participants of a Soviet antarctic expedition in 1962 and was named in honor of M. P. Lazarev.
