endotoxin-binding proteins

Blood proteins that bind to the dangerous endotoxin produced by GRAM NEGATIVE bacteria. Lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP) binds to a lipid component of bacterial endotoxin and delivers it to CD14 receptors on macrophages resulting in the release of inflammatory CYTOKINES. Another protein, the neutrophil granular protein bactericidal/ permeability-increasing protein (BPI) competes with LBP for toxin binding at the same site, blocks endotoxin delivery to macrophages and reduces the inflammatory response and the overall toxic effect.
