Morton, Levi P. Morton, Levi P. (Parsons)(1824–1920) vice-president, businessman; born in Shoreham, Vt. He began work as a store clerk and became extremely wealthy. He was a representative (Rep., N.Y.; 1879–81) and ambassador to France (1881–85) before becoming Benjamin Harrison's vice-president (1889–93). He was a conscientious vice-president, but was dropped from the ticket in 1892. He was governor of New York (1895–96) and continued to manage his extensive business interests. |
