Bohlen, Charles E.

Bohlen, Charles E. (Eustis)

(1904–74) diplomat; born in Clayton, N.Y. He was the premier Sovietologist in the State Department from 1931. He was liaison officer between the State Department and the White House (1944–46), ambassador to the Soviet Union (1953–57), the Philippines (1957–59), and France (1962–68). He played an important role in several international conferences, including Yalta in 1945.
