CalycanthaceaeCalycanthaceaea family of dicotyledonous plants. They are shrubs with opposite, entire, pinnately veined, exstipulate leaves. The flowers are solitary and bisexual; they have a concave calyculate torus with spiral distribution of its parts. The perianth consists of many petaloid leaflets. There are five or more stamens. The fruit is a compound nutlet. There are two genera, Calycanthus and Chimonanthus. The three or four species of Calycanthus are native to North America; the three species of Chimonanthus, to China. The species of both genera are often cultivated for their fragrant flowers. Of particular value is the Chimonanthuspraecox, which blossoms in the winter and in the early spring. In the USSR species of the family Calycanthaceae are grown on the Black Sea Shore of the Caucasus and, sometimes, in the Crimea and Middle Asia. REFERENCEZemiatin, B.
