coronary microvascular disease

coronary microvascular disease

,

CMD.

Abnormally reduced blood flow to the myocardium, resulting in ischemic chest pain in patients who have no evidence of obstruction to blood flow through the epicardial coronary arteries. It can be identified with coronary reactivity testing. CMD is more common in women than in men. Despite the normal appearance of the coronary arteries on angiography, CMD increases the risk for heart attack, heart failure, and sudden death. It can be treated with antiplatelet drugs like aspirin, beta blockers or other antianginal drugs, and statins. Synonym: coronary microvascular dysfunction
