Álvarez de Castro, Mariano
Born 1749; died 1810. A Spanish general and one of the heroes in the war of Spain’s independence in 1808–14.
Alvarez commanded the garrison of Gerona (in Northern Catalonia) which for nine months heroically resisted the superior French forces. After the French seized Gerona, Alvarez was put in prison, where he died.
